Pastor Karen's Post from Saturday

Good afternoon!

“Be still and know that I am God!”
We rediscovered this verse last Sunday in our adult Sunday school class. It was tucked into a reading (Psalm 46:1-11) on the assurance of faith.

What is interesting to me is that the command, “Be still and know…” is in the middle of a passage with battle imagery. The message is that God is present with us – and not only present – He is our refuge and strength when the battles rage around us.

The Psalmist tells us God is in control and will do what no human being can do; He can and will end all wars, in His time:

“Come, behold the works of the Lord;
see what desolation he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
He burns the shields with fire.”

And then the Psalmist quotes the Lord speaking to us:

“Be still, and know that I am God!
I am exalted among the nations,
I am exalted in the earth.”

The passage finishes:

“The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our refuge.”

In my busy life today, I need this Word from God! Don’t you?

Is your life busy to overwhelming at times, too?

Remember – “Be still and know that I am God.” And we are NOT God. We are just human –and need this powerful but loving Lord. We are wise to recognize our weaknesses and our need for Him.

We are foolish when we try to do everything all by ourselves. That is not what the Lord desires.

He wants to be our refuge and strength.

Will you let Him carry your burdens today -- and fill you afresh with His empowering Spirit?

Please pray with me:

“Almighty God, who breaks the bow and shatters the spear—ending all wars that rage around us… Thank you that we can trust in you and stop our endless activities that distract and overwhelm us. Help us find time to just be with you – and know you. You love us! And we cannot know you if we never have time to draw near you and pray or meditate on your Word. Teach us to be faithful followers of Christ. Let us feel your peace and assurance that you will work out everything we might worry about. And that you are always in control. Nothing we encounter today will be too much for us to handle because you will guide and strengthen us to do your will. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Our scripture readings today are Hebrews 11:1-6 and Psalm 46:1-11.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Karen
